Top Luxury Lodges in the Prestigious Sabi Sands

Previously known as the Sabi Sand Game Reserve, the now-renamed Sabi Sand Nature Reserve is undoubtedly the most prestigious Big Five reserve in South Africa. Thanks to years of professional and ethical guiding practices and dedicated conservation work, the Sabi Sands is renowned for its remarkable and consistent leopard sightings, allowing guests to observe these typically elusive cats in their natural habitat.

The Sabi Sands is a 160,000-acre Big Five wilderness that shares a 30-mile fenceless boundary with the iconic Kruger National Park, allowing for the free movement of animals between the two reserves. This free movement creates an exceptional and wild safari experience, further enhanced by a selection of 30 luxury lodges and interpretative guided experiences. To ensure an exclusive and ethical safari, the number of vehicles is limited at all high-profile sightings, providing a more intimate encounter with the wildlife as you observe their behavior.

When is it the Best time to Visit the Sabi Sand Nature Reserve

The Sabi Sand Nature Reserve is an exceptional year-round Big Five safari destination. However, the drama of game viewing and predator-prey interactions reaches its peak during the dry season to early spring (June to September), as animals compete for access to dwindling water sources. The Green Season (November to March) is characterized by a flourish of life. The fresh and revitalized landscape creates an atmosphere of abundance, with young impalas and warthogs appearing around November to December. Migratory birds also arrive, adding to the vibrant diversity of this period.

What you can expect from your Safari Experience.

The Sabi Sand Nature Reserve offers unique safari experiences throughout the year, each season bringing different expectations and wildlife encounters. Here’s a basic breakdown of what you can expect:

January to March

Summer in the Sabi Sands brings occasional afternoon thunderstorms, filling waterholes, dams, and river systems. This lush season makes predator sightings a bit more challenging as the wildlife spreads out amidst the thick vegetation. However, it offers expansive reserve exploration and vibrant landscapes perfect for stunning photography. Bird enthusiasts will delight in spotting migratory species like the Woodland Kingfisher and Wahlberg’s Eagle. Don’t forget your Swarovski binoculars for enhanced game viewing.

April to May

As the weather shifts, you experience the best of both worlds: lush landscapes teeming with life and drying waterholes that attract concentrated wildlife, increasing the chances of remarkable sightings and predator-prey interactions. The cooler temperatures also make game drives more comfortable and enjoyable.

June to September

For many, this is considered the prime safari season. The dried-out bush and thinner vegetation make spotting animals easier, especially at water sources where wildlife gathers, creating dramatic scenes. It’s an ideal time to witness lion-buffalo encounters and enjoy walking safaris, with improved visibility enhancing the overall experience. However, the days are shorter, offering less time between game drives to unwind at the lodge.

October to November

Known as the Emerald or Green Season, early rains rejuvenate the wilderness, creating lush landscapes and bringing a surge of newborns like impala lambs and warthogs. Predators, especially leopards and wild dogs, capitalize on these conditions, making for thrilling wildlife encounters. Insider’s Tip: with the chance of thunderstorms, we recommend staying a day or two longer. Many lodges, understanding this reality, have great “Long-Stay offers” – we can more about it!

December

By December, summer brings hot, humid weather, with game drives timed for comfortable mornings and afternoons. This gives you longer days to enjoy lodge amenities like spa treatments, pool relaxation, or community visits between game drives. Since it’s the rainy season, a minimum three-day lodge stay is recommended to fully experience the wilderness. And to be transparent, rates are more favorable with many “Long-Stay” offers—something worth considering, especially for families or groups.
