Uganda’s Largest Protected Wildlife Sanctuary

Despite its turbulent history, Uganda’s Murchison Falls National Park (set along the country’s western edge) is a conservation success story. Almost wiped out entirely due to unrestricted poaching and hunting during the reign of Idi Amin (1971 to 1979), the wildlife have returned in numbers thanks to the country’s huge restoration efforts.

Today, this year-round destination boasts a wonderful array of fauna and flora, offering abundant wildlife sightings from hippos and enormous Nile crocodiles to spotted hyenas, leopards, lions, and a variety of plains game, including the Rothschild giraffes, buffaloes, elephants, rare patas monkeys, and the main star, chimpanzees. Birdlife is equally spectacular with over 450 species recorded.

Named after its main attraction, the beautiful Murchison Falls, which is fed by the Victoria Nile, this park offers everything from lush savannahs and flourishing wetlands to tropical forests and woodlands – it really is a feast for the senses.
