How the Great Migration Moves throughout the year

Tap the months below to track the Great Wildebeest Migration’s usual path through the year. Rainfall influences their journey, so timings might shift a bit annually.

Calving Season | Southern Serengeti

Calving Season | Southern Serengeti

The herds are calving in the Southern parts of the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Here, it’s estimated over 400,000 calves are born in just a three week period. You're allowed to off-road in this area, providing a wonderful opportunity to follow cheetah across the plains while they hunt.

BEST FOR: Calving Season; Cheetah Viewing; Lion Prides; Off-Roading Permitted

Herds Begin to Move North

Herds Begin to Move North

Following the rains, the herds splinter towards the central parts of the Serengeti. In certain areas, due to heavy rains and restricted access, a few luxury lodges will close during this time. Therefore, it’s the perfect time to view the mass herds without the crowds! Think resident lion prides and territorial leopard viewing while searching for the migration during this time.

BEST FOR: Lion Prides; Leopard Viewing; Packed Bush Lunches

Grumeti River Crossings | Western Corridor

Grumeti River Crossings | Western Corridor

Mating season is in full swing. Splinter herds begin to congregate and move into the Western Corridor. As they make their way through to the Western Corridor and Grumeti region, the herds prepare for their first challenging obstacle of their journey – crossing the Grumeti River.

BEST FOR: Grumeti River Crossings; Large Lion Prides; Fewer Crowds

Masai Mara River Crossing | Kenya

Masai Mara River Crossing | Kenya

From the Grumeti region, the herds move north into the Masai Mara, crossing the Mara River back and forth to take advantage of the abundant grass on either side. This is quite naturally peak season though, so expect a few more vehicles at the crossing points.

BEST FOR: Mara River Crossings; Nile Crocodile kills; Predator Interaction

Migration Comes Full Circle

Migration Comes Full Circle

After grazing on the lush green plains of the Masai Mara, the herds prepare to move back south through the Loliondo area towards the Ndutu plains, as the grasses will have regenerated since the herds were there a year ago.

BEST FOR: Lion Prides; Leopard Viewing: Bush Lunches
